A psychoeducational assessment can help you to better understand how you or your child learn. It looks at how the brain processes information. For example: Do you learn better using pictures or words? How much information can you hold in your working memory at one time? How quickly do you complete simple tasks? This information can help you understand why learning or behavioural issues are happening, and what to do about them.
After a decade doing assessments, we prefer to take a therapeutic approach to assessments. We are trying to find out how you learn best and how to apply that to your life, school, home, work, relationships, etc. When we discuss the results of an assessment, we focus on what the results really mean and how to best capitalize on strengths in different settings so you have the best chance at success, while working with your weaknesses.
By understanding what kind of learner you are, or your child is, you can better ask for and seek strategies and accommodations for success. Once you know your learning style you can develop strategies and coping skills to be successful and develop confidence in yourself.
